MIDI is predominantly designed for musicians and producers to create or edit music or audio tracks, and so MIDI files can't be played by all media players. The format’s smaller file sizes make it ideal for sharing music online. MIDI files don’t contain an actual audio recording, but instead contain data about how the sound should be produced by a compatible playback device or software program, including the notation, pitch, speed, volume and tempo of each instrument.
The name MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, and the standard was launched in 1983. MIDI is a file format for creating, sharing and playing digital music.
